Cloud Solutions from Tencent Cloud for the Super App TribunX

2024/03/21 | 10 mins read

After introducing the concept of a Super App and the features of the TribunX app in our previous article, ever wondered what processes and cloud technologies it takes for a super app to run? What's under the hood of TribunX's jam-packed app?

Various cloud technologies ensure the best possible user experience, with optimized video quality and content delivery speeds. We'll take a look at the Tencent Cloud solutions powering the three main features beneath the surface, namely;

  1. Global CDN for instant, reliable and load-free access to content.
  2. Multicloud Data Migration to access a vast archive of Tribun's old and current content.
  3. Cloud Video Processing for secure, high-definition video playback.

Instant, reliable and load-free access to content with Tencent Cloud Global CDN.

TribunX's content will be based on Tencent Cloud's Global CDN Network, which has over 2,800 CDN (Content Delivery Network) cache nodes across 26 regions and 70 availability zones to support the acceleration of content delivery in several formats.

The globally distributed network provides a fast response to massive volumes of user requests for static pages and images, improves file download speeds and minimizes network jitters and latencies when displaying audio and video-on demand content to deliver a smooth, high-quality video experience.

Regardless of where users are located on the globe, the large number of CDNs in Tencent Cloud's globally distributed network places cached content closer to users all across Indonesia and guarantees rapid delivery of content regardless of location, improving the overall user experience.

TribunX's speed and ease of use is further made possible by Multicloud technologies. When it comes to data migration from the old Tribun app to the new TribunX app, multiple cloud solutions providers step in to handle the massive amounts of data from Tribun's past and present.

Picture Migration with Cloud Object Storage

Process

  1. Images from the old Tribun platforms were hosted on a separate Cloud Object Storage (COS) service. These are downloaded from the previous COS onto the Tencent Cloud Online Video Platform (TOVP) Migration App, with image file names kept the same for easy identification.

  2. The TOVP Migration App will then upload the images to Tencent Cloud Cloud Object Storage (COS), while a migration record is made for each image.

Benefits

Cloud Object Storage, also called object-based storage, saves data as individual objects, each with its own unique identifier, metadata, and data. With no limits on data storage, data structure or format, any amount of data from anywhere and any format can be stored. Large amounts of TribunX's unstructured image data can hence be saved and organized without a fixed structure for greater scalability, flexibility and easy customization. This is the ideal cost-efficient solution for Tribun's years of content to be stored and accessed by app users.

COS also ensures stable and durable data storage, with redundant storage, remote disaster recovery, resource isolation capabilities, and high levels of security against malicious access, DDos and CC attacks.

Article Migration with Database Cloud Migration

Process

  1. Existing article data from the old Tribun web platforms, such as the Tribunnews website, were previously stored in a Cloud Database (DB). This data will be backed up and its copies migrated to a new Tencent Cloud DB.

  2. Using the TOVP DB migration app, the existing data is synchronised with new database records.

  • New article data created for the new TribunX app is stored in the new Tencent Cloud database. This data is retrieved from this new database by the app when it is viewed by app users.

  • The old Tribun web platforms and its existing data can still be accessed after being retrieved from the previous cloud database.

Benefits

With a tailored solution to migrate data to the cloud using multiple databases, data from the previous Tribun platforms are still available for user access from the existing cloud database. Meanwhile, lag for the TribunX app is reduced by freeing up its internal storage and storing new article data into a Tencent Cloud database. Furthermore, Tencent Cloud's database solutions simplifies and optimizes mass data migration into a seamless, automatic process while still maintaining user accessibility to the stored data. This low cost, efficient, highly secure system also makes professional maintenance services from Tencent Cloud available to the TribunX app.

Video Upload and Storage with the Tencent Online Video Platform

The Tribun News and Tribun Video websites rely on the YouTube Video Platform to host and play live streaming and video-on-demand content. The TribunX app continues to do the same, but additionally utilises the Tencent Cloud Online Video Platform (TOVP) to store and upload video content.

Process

  1. Livestreams are uploaded onto TOVP and then accessed on the TribunX App.

  2. Video-on-demand, when uploaded, is uploaded parallel to both TOVP and YouTube simultaneously.

  3. Video-on-demand can be accessed on both the TribunX app and the Tribun websites, from both the TOVP and YouTube.

Benefits

Similar to the tailored cloud database solution for article migration, by using the Tencent Cloud Online Video Platform, the TribunX app provides users access to videos old and new without burdening the TribunX app with the need to store vast amounts of video content. Live streaming is also made available and more accessible by being stored on TOVP in particular.

The TOVP is also designed to optimize Video-on-Demand content and live streams with numerous features in the section below.

Secure, high-definition video playback with Cloud Video Processing

The Tencent Online Video Platform offers cloud video processing services with multiple features to ensure a secure, high-quality video experience for both Video-on-Demand and live streams on the TribunX app, regardless of location or network conditions. These features are the following:

Real-Time Messaging Protocol (RTMP)

Video streams are split into smaller packets delivered on separate channels. For example, video and audio are delivered on separate channels simultaneously.

Greater amounts of data can be transmitted with low latency, ensuring smooth video playback and live video streaming with minimal jittering or buffering.

Video Transcoding

Transcoding is a product of RMTP video processing. The original video or livestream is converted into streams of different codecs, resolutions, and bitrates in the cloud before being pushed to viewers.

This meets playback needs in varying network environments on different devices, such as allowing live videos to be streamed on devices with slower Wi-Fi speeds or limited data.

Adaptive Bitrate

Based on device and network conditions, video quality is adjusted automatically. The video player will automatically switch to the most appropriate stream based on the current network environment.

Hence, video streaming over HTTP networks is improved. Similar to video transcoding, adaptive bitrate also works to deliver optimal video and audio quality even over a low bitrate.

Digital Rights Management (DRM) Solution

The DRM solution includes transcoding, packaging, license generation, key management and encryption. In particular, DRM encryption stores and transmits video content in an encrypted form, only allowing authorized users and devices to play it back.

This protects video uploaders from having their video content stolen and played on unauthorized devices by unauthorized users, preventing economic losses from video piracy and maintaining the security of video content.
